The best crypto podcast episodes of 2020

Andy Pickering, host of the Crypto Conversation podcast compiles an eclectic mix of the best bitcoin, crypto and crypto adjacent podcast episodes of 2020.

In 2020, the global pandemic created turbulence across all sectors. No part of society was immune, not even podcasts. When the first lockdowns went into effect in March, podcast downloads stagnated as commute times dropped. But then, just like the Bitcoin price chart, after bottoming out, people began to listen again, and when the Bitcoin price started tracking up, so did podcast listeners. In 2020 the leading crypto podcasts grew in scope and popularity and it became increasingly difficult to keep up with the stream of constant high-quality crypto podcast content.

As well as hosting Brave New Coin’s Crypto Conversation podcast, I listen to a lot of crypto podcast content myself. So here it is, my subjective but definitive list of the best bitcoin, crypto, and crypto adjacent podcast episodes of 2020. In no particular order, all are essential listens.

  1. What Bitcoin Did host Peter McCormack had another huge year dropping a number of classic episodes to crush the podcast game. In October there was a rare appearance by the Winklevoss twins discussing their Bitcoin to $500K prediction, and in the same month, Pete hosted one of the first podcast appearances by Michael Saylor where he explained his massive all or nothing bet on Bitcoin via MicroStrategy. However, my favorite episode was this esoteric conversation between Pete and Brandon Quittem of Swan Bitcoin. The pair discuss the classic 1996 book The Fourth Turning by Neil Howe and William Strauss which suggests that every 80-90 years a crisis recurs known as the Fourth Turning, and what the implications are for Bitcoin.

  2. Sydney based Stephan Livera consistently brings the Bitcoin heat from an Austrian/Libertarian/Maximalist perspective. In this episode, Stephan talks with Lyn Alden about Bitcoin’s role as an emerging store of value. Alden was one of many to make the leap from traditional investing to Bitcoin in 2020, and she is particularly pragmatic and full of insight.

  3. Anthony Pompliano, most of you know him as Pomp, was relentless in 2020, re-branding to The Pomp Podcast, and rocketing to the top of the podcast charts. Back in April, when the world was full of COVID doom, billionaire investor Chamath Palihapitiya joined Pomp for an illuminating discussion on investing, Bitcoin, how to solve the structural issues in health and economics, why being a patient investor will pay off, and how the world is going to change once the pandemic is over.

  4. The always astute Laura Shin had an impressive year with many high profile guests. This episode with Jake Chervinsky, general counsel at Compound Labs, and Kristin Smith, executive director of The Blockchain Association is a super nerdy discussion about the storm brewing in the cryptosphere around self-custody and privacy. Vital context to the regulatory battles that are fast approaching.

  5. In 2020 Australia’s finest Alex Saunders took his popular YouTube channel Nuggets News to new heights. Alex puts out a formidable amount of content, but I especially enjoyed this long conversation with the inimitable Peter Schiff. Peter runs through his anti-Bitcoin talking points and Alex fact checks him along the way. Great entertainment no matter what side of the argument you’re on.

  6. Eric Weinstein can be something of an acquired taste, and his conversations on The Portal are a mix of frustrating and inspiring. Eric’s 3-hour discussion with Balaji Srinivasan was no different, but it is valuable nonetheless in providing insight into Balaji’s unusual ability to spot emerging global trends ahead of the curve. Here he talks about being one of the first to identify and publicize the COVID threat, comparing his conviction that this was a pandemic to the conviction he first felt about Bitcoin.

  7. Here at Brave New Coin, we published a new podcast every week with a diverse selection of high-profile guests such as Mark Yusko and the pseudonymous Rekt Capital. I particularly enjoyed this episode with DJ J-Scrilla, a hip-hop producer who made an album about Bitcoin called Sound Money. I also enjoyed this episode withof Parallax Digital. In 2020 Robert emerged as one of the most thoughtful writers on Bitcoin, and in this episode he discusses his superb Medium post, The Number Zero and Bitcoin. Robert says “Satoshi gave the world Bitcoin, a true ‘something for nothing’. This discovery of absolute scarcity for money is an unstoppable idea that is changing the world tremendously, just like its digital ancestor: the number zero.”

  8. One of the best new podcasts to emerge in 2020 is Bankless. Bankless has a podcast and a SubStack newsletter focused on Crypto Finance. The scope is broad and they are particularly good on Ethereum and DeFi. I recommend this episode with Mr Ethereum himself, Vitalik Buterin, explaining the controversial, but necessary Ethereum 2.0 roadmap and the design choices made.

  9. Macro investor turned crypto bull Raoul Pal has grown his Real Vision service into a powerhouse of finance content. Start with this video where Raoul breaks down the events leading to the growing interest in Central Bank Digital Currencies. He touches on the various crises that have encouraged rampant money printing by central banks and the destructive consequences this has left in its wake. He describes Bitcoin as the unkillable “cockroach of finance” and a financial life raft for this transitional period in history. All aboard.

  10. Let’s round out the top ten with an episode of Max Keiser and Stacey Herbet’s Orange Pill podcast. Max and Stacey are OG Bitcoiners and wonderfully eccentric podcast hosts. In this episode, they host the equally eccentric Sean Ono Lennon, for an entertaining discussion on Donna Summer, disco, history, philosophy, and Bitcoin.
