White House Appoints Bitcoin Researcher Ed Felten as Chief Tech Officer

Princeton professor and Bitcoin researcher, Ed Felten has been named U.S deputy Chief Technology Officer by the White House. Through his new role, Felten will advise president Obama on policy issues related to technology, data and web security.

Felten has been studying and participating in Bitcoin for several years. Aside from writing on, and teaching about, the subject he also testified as part of the BitLicense hearings, advocating for a level-headed approach to digital currency regulation.

He previously worked as the chief technologist for the Federal Trade Commission in 2012, advising and updating the governmental agency on the latest technological trends. While he works as the White House’s CTO, he will be on leave from his teaching positions at Princeton.

Pro-Bitcoin OverStock CEO Joins Rand Paul

The news of the White House’s recent tech appointments comes days after presidential candidate Rand Paul appointed OverStock CEO, Patrick Byrne, to his tech consuel. Bryne was an early adopter of Bitcoin and made OverStock accept the digital currency in 2013. He has since announced plans to use the distributed ledger behind Bitcoin to build a more “ethical stock market.”

Rand Paul become the first presidential candidate to accept the digital currency on April 7, the day he also announced that his candidacy.Those interested can now donate Bitcoin to his presidential campaign through the merchant payment processor, BitPay.

In an interview with Bloomberg News, Paul was asked for his thoughts on the digital currency and replied, "I’ve been fascinated by the concept of it, but I never would have purchased it myself. I’m just a little bit skeptical.”In a 2014 interview, he said that digital currency could be improved if it was backed by stocks.
