Lithium Price Rebound Faces a Test as China Futures Volatility Returns

Lithium Price Rebound Faces a Test as China Futures Volatility Returns

After months of relentless selling, lithium is making a comeback, with its price in China's primary index rising to CNY 91,700 per tonne, though a steep monthly drop suggests the recovery is tenuous.

Investors are now watching to see if the rebound has become a rally as futures volatility is rising and U.S. energy policy is entering a new chapter as battery demand renews, buoying investors.

The Market Is Struggling to Find Direction

The lithium carbonate market in China shows signs of a potential rebound, but the recovery is fragile. According to the provided Trading Economics chart, the price of lithium is projected to reach CNY 91,700 per tonne by November 5, 2026.

It has risen 14.05% year over year but dropped 26.61% month over month. This comparison reveals how fast gains in the past have been wiped out in recent sales.

The Market Is Struggling to Find DirectionThe one-year chart shows the magnitude of the correction. The price of lithium rose from around CNY 80,000 per tonne to CNY 180,000 in early 2026. Source: TradingEconomics

The price later jumped to about CNY 200,000 in May and then started a long downward trend. There were several attempts to regain the previous momentum, but they were unsuccessful. Close to the low end of the annual trading range, the market had returned by November. The structure indicates that sellers still had the upper hand for the moment, even with the recent price stability.

Futures trading provides a more real-time view. The Futures Exchange of Guangzhou’s January 2027 contract closed at CNY 90,800 on Nov 5, posting a 2.76% rise. The December 2026 contract settled at CNY 92,160, up 1.72%. The January contract, on the other hand, had reached CNY 88,360 when it closed on Nov. 4 after dropping 1.80% during the session.

Strong selling pressure is thus expected to be present before the rebound is considered a confirmation of a bull market reversal. The latest contract references are given in the market data and lithium futures contract history published by SMM on November 5.

Supply, Battery Demand, and Inventories Could Shape the Next Move

The next big driver will be whether battery makers buy more to make up for the supply. The demand for lithium is subject to the production of electric vehicles, the installation of battery storage systems, and the programs of producers. If orders are stronger, producers would be encouraged to replenish inventories, which would bolster prices. Weaker order activity for batteries or slower sales, however, might lead to fewer buyers competing for the available suppliers.

It is particularly important to look at inventory trends. During the week ending Oct. 30, the battery-grade lithium carbonate prices averaged CNY 96,100 per tonne at the Shanghai Metals Market, according to the market. It also noted that the most-traded futures contract had dipped 8.4% to CNY 88,360.

Inventories in the industry fell during that week, but smelter inventories rose. That’s important because long-term pressure downstream doesn’t necessarily translate to pressure throughout the production chain. The investors should watch out for real inventory declines, processing volume, and new orders before assuming that the latest recovery is the right one. SMM industry update.

From a technical perspective, the next price level to monitor is CNY 90,000. A possible bounce back to CNY 95,000–100,000 would be aided by such an action as holding above it. If it keeps rising above CNY 100,000, it will be more convincing that buyers are coming back. On the other hand, if the selling persists below CNY 90,000, the CNY 85,000 range could get exposed, which is the previous low area in the chart. These are monitoring levels, not price guarantees.

US Midterm Election Aftermath Adds Policy Uncertainty

A Democrat won control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the November 3 U.S. midterm elections. The price action in the financial markets started with a strong recovery in the key US shares following overnight volatility.

The dollar and yields on U.S. Treasuries also declined in early trading, and investors had to rethink the odds of legislative dysfunction. But these are mainly movements across the general financial markets and not a confirmed reaction in the lithium futures market. Market reaction.

The election has a profound impact on lithium investors because of its implications for future U.S. energy, trade, and industrial policies. Modifications of battery incentive & support, electric-vehicle support, tariffs, and critical mineral supply-chain programs may affect investment decisions.

Changes to the policy landscape could push back some projects, and ongoing support for domestic mineral production could attract investment away from China. However, Congress does not set the price for lithium in China. Meanwhile, production levels, inventories, battery orders, and export flows in China are more direct drivers.

For investors, the weeks ahead are a time of confirmation, not anticipation. The recovery would be bolstered by a sustained upward breakout from CNY 95,000, as well as continued inventory draws and improved battery orders. The risk that the inventory would continue to build up, due to failure to collect CNY 90,000, would be heightened, along with subdued demand from the downstream market. The election has a longer-term impact on investment in the United States, but China’s supply/demand imbalance will probably govern lithium’s next move.
