Sky Mavis Slashes 21% of Workforce Amid Strategic Shift

Sky Mavis, the web3 gaming company behind Axie Infinity, has announced a 21% reduction in its workforce, a move co-founder and CEO Trung Nguyen described as “tough but necessary.”

Nguyen emphasized that the layoffs were not driven by financial concerns but were instead a strategic decision to focus on core products and position the company for accelerated growth in 2025.

Refining Focus for the Future

In a statement on X, Nguyen acknowledged that the company experienced a year of “valuable growth and evolution.” However, he stated that the company now aims to sharpen its focus, concentrating on flagship initiatives:

  • Ronin Wallet and Waypoint
  • Mavis Marketplace
  • Axie Infinity
  • Web3 game publishing
  • Expansion of the Ronin Network to support additional builders
  • Development of a new Axie game

This pivot reflects a move away from trying to cater to all users and toward bolstering the company’s most impactful platforms and products.

Sky Mavis, which had approximately 250 employees in 2023 across its Singapore headquarters and subsidiaries in Vietnam, the U.S., and Norway, has not disclosed the total number of workers impacted by the layoffs.

Layoffs Ripple Through the Crypto Sector

Sky Mavis is not the only crypto-related company facing workforce reductions. Despite Bitcoin reaching new all-time highs in recent weeks and the prospect of clearer U.S. crypto regulations under Donald Trump’s re-elected administration, several major firms have downsized:

  • Kraken laid off 400 employees, about 30% of its workforce, on Oct. 31.
  • DYDX reduced staff by 25% last month.
  • Consensys cut 162 jobs, or 20% of its workforce.

Other notable layoffs this year include Matter Labs, Polygon, Fireblocks, Sorare, Moonpay, and Paxos, signaling a broader trend of streamlining across the industry.

What’s Next for Sky Mavis?

Despite the cuts, Sky Mavis remains committed to driving innovation in web3 gaming. With its upcoming land system for Axie Infinity and plans to expand the Ronin ecosystem, the company is doubling down on its strengths to maintain its leadership in blockchain-based gaming.

The broader question remains: can focused innovation and strategic recalibration help Sky Mavis navigate the competitive and volatile web3 landscape? Time will tell if these moves pay off in the long run.
