Comic artist Mark McKenna debuts digital artworks on MakersPlace

MakersPlace, a marketplace for digital artworks on Ethereum, has released new digital artworks by Marvel/DC artist Mark McKenna

One of the fastest-growing narratives in crypto is the emerging digital art scene. Digital artists can create rare digital artworks that can be authenticated on the blockchain to provide proof of provenance and proof of ownership. Blockchains are enabling new ways for art collectors to communicate with artists, creating new markets and new forms of patronage.

Today, MakersPlace, a marketplace for digital artworks verified on the Ethereum blockchain, has released three new artworks by Marvel/DC artist Mark McKenna. MakersPlace has also debuted a collaboration between McKenna and fellow comic illustrator José Delbo (Wonder Woman, Transformers).

MakersPlace is a marketplace for rare digital art, with rarity and proof of ownership authenticated by the Ethereum blockchain. Every artist and artwork featured on MakersPlace is verified through a multi-step identity verification process. MakersPlace was founded by a team of early Pinterest staff. It has funding from Uncork Capital, Draper Dragon Fund, Abstract Ventures, and angel investors from Pinterest, Facebook, and Coinbase.

The drop

Today’s art drop includes three original artworks by Mark McKenna, two collaborative pieces by McKenna and José Delbo, and a father/daughter collaboration between Delbo and his daughter Silvana.

Delbo is an Argentinian born artist. In the 70s he worked on comic book versions of classic tv shows such as The Twilight Zone, The Brady Bunch, Hogan’s Heroes, Buck Rogers, and The Monkees. In the 80s, long before the modern superhero dominated the big screen, Delbo worked for the iconic comic brands DC and Marvel, illustrating titles including Superman, Batman, Aquaman, Green Arrow, The Transformers and The Thundercats. Delbo released his first piece of digital art on the blockchain in July of this year in the form of a 43 page original digital comic book called Death. Delbo’s digital artworks have gone on to break sales records, selling for over ~$135K+ on MakersPlace.

Inspired by the interest in Delbo’s digital art, Mark McKenna is the latest comic book artist to go digital via the blockchain. McKenna is an American artist who has worked extensively for both Marvel and DC comics. He has illustrated for X-Men, Spider Man, Batman, The Justice League, Dead Pool, and Star Wars.

McKenna’s debut digital artworks showcase well-known characters from a galaxy far far away. McKenna juxtaposes timeless sci-fi characters against the turmoil of 2020, creating artwork with a satirical bite.

The piece to the left above is titled Intergalactic Unemployment Office. Mckenna creates a universe where the coronavirus has expanded its reach past earth’s atmosphere, wreaking havoc on planets across the galaxy including the galaxy’s capital city Coruscant. In this artwork, McKenna gives us a look into how the city’s residents have been affected and highlights the universal struggle brought on by this turbulent time in history. The three pieces depicted above are available in limited digital editions now on MakersPlace.

McKenna told Brave New Coin that he is extremely excited to be joining the blockchain based art movement. “I hope the community enjoys my newest works which take some of my best-known characters and places them in the midst of the 2020 turbulence we are all feeling, offering a light-hearted, humorous perspective,” said McKenna. “It’s also been an honor to work with José Delbo on a collaboration piece that symbolizes the future of digital comic art.”

A new collaboration by McKenna and Delbo, Into The Future speaks to the catalyzation of the comic art industry as it pushes further into the future of art creation and consumption. This artwork features a combination of Delbo and McKenna’s most popular characters, being led by the one who started it all, Death.

Dannie Chu, CEO of MakersPlace, says the Delbo x McKenna collaboration represents an inflection point in the crypto art space. “We are seeing continued excitement from established artists across genres coming to join this growing movement. It is inspiring to see comic art legends such as José Delbo acting as an inspiration and guide for his peers like Mark McKenna. This is just the beginning of the future of digital comic art collecting.”

McKenna is likely to be proven correct as the digital art scene starts to mature. Long term trends point to a cyberpunk-esque world of digital interfaces, augmented reality, virtual reality, and OLED wallpaper, as the barriers between the physical and digital worlds continue to dissolve.
