NNSA Removes Enriched Uranium From Venezuela as Nuclear Focus Rises

The U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration has finished disposing of the last of its enriched uranium from Venezuela, which was a major nuclear security hazard in South America.

It was an operation with the 13.5 kg of uranium from the legacy research reactor RV-1.

It was a development that coincided with the resurgence of uranium and nuclear energy into the limelight. NANO Nuclear Energy, meanwhile, came into focus after an X post indicating that the stock is following the overall trend in uranium but could present a deeper cycle low later this year.

NNSA Completes Venezuela Mission

NNSA stated it cooperated with its partners to deplete enriched uranium from an old research reactor in Venezuela. According to the agency, the operation was an urgent nonproliferation mission, where it had to cooperate closely with the international partners and technical teams.

The uranium was from the RV-1 reactor that provided physics services and nuclear research for decades. That work was completed in 1991, but the resulting uranium is still enriched above the critical level of 20%.

The NNSA said less than six weeks after the first site visit, technical experts were able to remove 13.5 kilograms (about 30 pounds) of uranium from the reactor. This material was then placed in a special spent fuel cask.

The team took the cask approximately 100 miles by land to a port in Venezuela. It was then transported to the United States using a special U.K.-based carrier, Nuclear Transport Solutions, arriving in early May.

Material Heads to U.S. Processing

Removal of all enriched uranium from Venezuela is another indicator of a revived and renewed Venezuela,” said NNSA Administrator Brandon Williams. He also stated that the teams would normally take years to finish, but instead, they were able to do that in months.

Dr. Matt Napoli, Deputy Administrator for Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation, also commented on the operation. He could not have been prouder of the men and women who did this important job and thanked the Venezuelan partners for their participation.

The teams brought the material to the Savannah River Site in the United States when they arrived. The DOE Office of Environmental Management has assumed stewardship of it, and it will be processed by technicians at the H-Canyon chemical separations facility.

The material will aid the production of high-assay, low-enriched uranium for America’s nuclear renaissance, the NNSA said. Additionally, since 1996, the agency has removed or vouched for the disposition of over 7,350 kg of highly enriched uranium and plutonium, the agency said.

NNE Chart Tracks Nuclear Momentum

In the current geopolitical climate, uranium is rising in the investment arena and has put nuclear energy back on the agenda, according to Investing to Mars, said on X. The post indicated that NANO Nuclear Energy is looking to join the trend with portable and stationary small modular reactors.

Later, the price surged from some earlier levels and is currently around $26.70, as indicated in the attached NNE chart. The cycle map suggested a likely low in Q4 2026, while the analyst noted that risks were to the downside of the March low of $18.

NNE Chart Tracks Nuclear Momentum

Notably, the X chart also predicted a much larger bull phase further down the road in the cycle. The next big leap is in investing, and the price of NNE could rise to $800 and hit its peak around mid-2028, Investing to Mars said.

NNE remains in a broader recovery range for daily price action instead of a longer-term breakout. The near-term dynamics will remain stable to the upside if the hold is maintained above the March lows, and the deeper cyclical-low scenario indicated on the chart can be seen as the broader lows extend further down to $18.
